Information
Radix Bupleuri Extract: A Comprehensive Overview
Radix Bupleuri, commonly known as Bupleurum root or Chaihu in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Apiaceae family. Its dried root has been utilized for over two millennia in East Asian medicine systems, primarily for its hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and mood-regulating properties. The extract derived from this plant, Radix Bupleuri extract, is a complex mixture of bioactive compounds that have garnered significant attention in modern pharmacological research.
Botanical Profile
Radix Bupleuri is primarily sourced from two species: Bupleurum chinense DC. and Bupleurum scorzonerifolium Willd. These plants are characterized by their slender, branching roots and small yellow flowers. The roots are harvested in autumn or spring, dried, and then processed into various forms, including powders, decoctions, or standardized extracts. The extract is typically a brownish-yellow powder with a characteristic bitter taste, reflecting its rich phytochemical composition.
Chemical Composition
The extract contains a diverse array of bioactive compounds, with triterpenoid saponins (saikosaponins) being the most prominent. Saikosaponins A, B, C, and D are the primary active constituents, each exhibiting distinct pharmacological profiles. Additionally, the extract includes flavonoids, lignans, essential oils, and polysaccharides. These compounds work synergistically to produce the herb's therapeutic effects, with saikosaponins playing a pivotal role in its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory actions.
Traditional Uses
In TCM, Radix Bupleuri has been traditionally used to treat liver disorders, including hepatitis and liver cirrhosis, as well as conditions like fever, malaria, and mood disorders such as depression. Its ability to "soothe the liver and relieve stagnation" makes it a cornerstone in formulas like Xiao Yao San
