Information
Squalane is a saturated long‑chain hydrocarbon, typically obtained from plant sources or by synthesis, appearing as a colorless, odorless, low‑viscosity oil with excellent skin compatibility. In personal‑care products it serves as a premier moisturizing base oil, forming a thin, breathable film on the skin that markedly reduces transepidermal water loss, delivering a “non‑greasy” feel; consequently it is widely incorporated into creams, lotions, serums, conditioners, lipsticks, primers and other cosmetics. Its strong antioxidant stability protects other actives from oxidative degradation, extending product shelf life and safety. Squalane also functions as an emulsifying aid, facilitating rapid and uniform mixing of oil and water phases while lowering formulation viscosity, which eases manufacturing. Beyond cosmetics, in the pharmaceutical sector it is used as a base oil for topical ointments and creams, providing a soft application texture and enhancing percutaneous drug delivery; it is common in sunscreens, reparative balms, and skin‑barrier restoratives. Industrially, its chemical inertness and superior lubricity make it suitable for high‑performance lubricants and anti‑corrosion agents, especially where temperature and oxidative stability are critical, such as in precision equipment components. Overall, squalane’s moisturizing, antioxidant, emulsifying and lubricating properties have established it as a key functional ingredient in cosmetics, topical medicines, and specialty lubricants.
